Help! How to support the learning of the children in your care - in Lockdown #3
Understanding the learning style of the children in your care can make it easier to support their learning at home.
Pity the schools, pity the parents and carers!
We in the UK have crashed into another lockdown, and schools and colleges closed with virtually no notice for their staff, or for parents and carers of the students affected.
Schools and colleges are transitioning to delivering teaching online, and many of us parents and carers will be called upon to help the children in our care make sense of what’s being asked of them.
Understanding the learning style of the children in our care, can help us to help them. For example, a visual learner will probably engage with online learning and handouts, but a kinaesthetic learner may struggle to engage as they need to ‘do’ learning - practical sessions, or being active (‘fidgeting’) will help them process new information.
I have put together 3 short videos explaining the 3 main learning styles*; audio, kinaesthetic, and visual. My aim is to help you understand how these learning styles affect how students learn, and help you tailor your support so it is as effective as it can be. It’s also useful for us as parents and carers to know what our own learning style is, as this will be our ‘default’ way of wanting to help. This is great if you and the children in your care have the same learning style, and a bit more of a challenge if they are different!
*I have not included reader/writer as a separate learning style, as there is a huge cross-over with visual learning.
